The San Lucas Health Project was founded in 1990 to promote the health of the community in San Lucas Tolimán. The organization is comprised entirely of volunteers. Volunteers come from many different occupations and professions and from many different parts of the country.

Funding of the SLHP is through donations. Donated funds are used to purchase medications, medical equipment, textbooks and training materials for the health promoters. A tiny percentage of donated funds is used to support this web site and the various legal fees for registration and state incorporation.

Volunteers finance their way to Guatemala. Once there, they are the guests of the mission church in San Lucas. The mission provides housing and food. Volunteers are encouraged to leave a donation to help defray the costs of the room and board. Volunteers are also responsible for personal and tourist expenses. Religious affiliation is not a requirement for any volunteer to participate.
